Gifts for Dad 2015

Father’s Day is right around the corner! What are you doing to celebrate Dad? It’s been so fun watching James and Olivia’s relationship blossom. Our toddler is quite the helper these days and very interested in Daddy’s house projects. I wanted our gift to him this year to capture a sense of “building” moments and memories.

I came across this PIN and absolutely fell in love with the concept! I bought a cheap hammer, found a Woodburner Pen (marked half off), and set to work!

Full project disclosure: Things didn’t quite go as planned. A quick and easy project quickly turned into 2 hours of fighting with the wood grain to make legible swirls. I wouldn’t chalk this up to a “Pinterest Fail,” but… man, oh man! I sanded. I retraced my outlines. And, I might have started to pull my hair out! I even burned my hand! (Thank goodness for lavender essential oil!) Believe me, I’m well aware that I’m missing a comma between “build” and “Daddy.” This project was definitely more time consuming than expected! But, I do think James will get a kick out the idea and effort that went into this handmade Father’s Day gift.

I paired this engraved hammer with a free template from Mr. Printables. I couldn’t be happy with how it came together. Check out the dimension! James always admires cards that have an “engineering” aspect to them, so I know he will love the stair-step effect created with this printable! You can grab your free copy HERE.

Father’s Day Gift 2014

To celebrate Father’s Day this year, I knew I wanted to do something special for James.  We’ve had quite a year of ups and downs!  When I saw a template for adorable printable book on the blog I Heart Nap Time, I knew it would be the perfect gift for our superhero!  Here’s how my version turned out:

Super Dad Book

I used Photoshop Elements to superimpose James’ head on all the pages.  A bit of washi tape, a “Dad” rubber stamp, and a personalized message embellished my project.  To bind my book, I used the Sew Easy Paper Stitching Piercing tool to create an evenly spaced row of holes.  Then, I threaded blue baker’s twine to complete the spine.

I was so excited to see Erin of Strawberry Mommycakes as the designer of this awesome printable.  I’ve had the pleasure of working with Erin several times on projects for The Dating Divas (check out my recent posts: Mother’s Day Adventure and The Puzzle Date for more of her amazing work!).

Super Dad Treats

….Definitely had to include these adorable snack toppers filled with James’ favorite treats: Skittles and Peanut Butter M&Ms!

Olivia wore her Super Girl t-shirt from Target and presented her SUPER DAD with his gift and candy!  What a great day filled with wonderful memories and the perfect Father’s Day gift.

“Posting” Our First Father’s Day Memories

Father's-Day-2013

I might be a bit biased, but this beautiful baby girl has the most amazing Dad.  To celebrate Father’s Day this year, I was inspired by Paige’s “Post-It Pictures” idea on The Dating Divas.  Instead of leaving general fun captions, however, I tailored each message to be a specific reason explaining why James is a fantastic Dad.  My project started with these guys…

…which were turned into 65  little love notes to display on each picture of James or Olivia in our house.  The heart conversation bubble post-it notes were just perfect for this project!  If the picture was of Olivia, I tried to think up something fun that she might say or list how she already takes after her Dad in some small way.

When James walked in the door, he found this little grouping that explained all the fun:

The whole process of writing and placing notes took a little longer than I expected but it was so meaningful to walk down memory lane, focus on how our little family has grown in the past couple of months, and make predictions about the future.

Here’s a mini tour of where some of the little messages where placed:

James loved the fact that I incorporated a challenge into this Father’s Day gift.  He could only open up a final card once he found all the hearts!

Cheers to all the fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers celebrating this special day!

Father’s Day Card Ideas

Last year, I was newly pregnant when Father’s Day rolled around.  I wanted to do something special for James to mark the day so I created this card inspired by a photo I found on Pinterest:

I was thrilled that one of the talented graphic designers working with The Dating Divas agreed to translate this card into an easy printable for our readers.  To see how the project turned out, check out this post: To Our Mr. Fix-It on Father’s Day.
